Daniel François Esprit Auber is, together with Jacques Offenbach, the main exponent of French Comic Opera.
With more than 40 operas at his name, his contribution to the genre is unique. This collection of scores includes some of his early works – for the first time available to the public.
Le Philtre was one of Auber’s more successful works, especially rich in his characteristic grace and in freshness of melody. The Overture focuses on the love triangle at the centre of the story with themes from the Act I trio for Thérèsine, Jolicoeur and Guillaume. The opera remained popular in Paris until 1862, with 243 performances.
