Daniel François Esprit Auber is, together with Jacques Offenbach, the main exponent of French Comic Opera.
With more than 40 operas at his name, his contribution to the genre is unique. This collection of scores includes some of his early works – for the first time available to the public.
Fra Diavolo is Auber’s more famous opera. This opera presents a series of memorable characters in addition to the notorious protagonist Fra Diavolo the robber-chief: Zerline the deft heroine of humble background, her idealistic and romantic lover the brigadier Lorenzo, and the travelling English aristocrats, Lord Cockburn and Lady Pamela, great comic creations. Act III Entracte is a short and beautifully created passage.
