“For my dear friend and colleague Michael Gray”

This work was inspired by the only painting that still exists of the three Brontë sisters. Within the blurry column of light in the middle of the picture you can just make out the shape of a man. This is the portrait’s painter Branwell Brontë, brother of Charlotte, Emily and Anne, who painted himself into the picture – then rubbed himself out. We don’t know why.

The canvas was folded in quarters and stored on top of a cupboard in a farm in Ireland for many years, before being rescued. It now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
