Preface and programme notes
Set to a Latin text taken from the Litany of Saint Joseph (traditional Catholic devotion prayer), this work comprises a very sparse piano accompaniment.
Made up of three component sections, the first section (miserere nobis) is sung without accompaniment. This is followed by the piano adding an open chordal accompaniment to the ora pro nobis section.
In the final section (Kyrie eleison), the piano acts as a choir substitute in a call-and-response litany form, where the voice alternates with the piano in a style known as responsorial singing.
