Ingeborg von Bronsart was an accomplished performer and aspiring composer since the age of 14. Jery und Bätely was composed after the failure of her first opera premiere, though exactly when or why Bronsart decided to compose Jery und Bätely is still not clear.
Jery und Bätely opens with a substantial Overture, the only extended instrumental passage in the entire opera. Bronsart incorporated thematic material drawn from the sung musical numbers in the rest of the opera, providing a strong sense of unity and close musical connection to the work as a whole.
The work belongs to the Singspiel tradition. All of the action is conveyed in spoken dialogue, interspersed with sung musical numbers where characters reflect on the action.
